Design Details: Pillows

“The details are not the details. They make the design.” -Charles Eames

Many details must come together in a beautifully designed room to create a harmonious whole. One of those details can be pillows. With pillows, you can instantly add softness, texture, and warmth to a space. And they are a fun way to add exquisite trims and fabrics that might break the budget if done on a drapery or piece of furniture. Here’s a look at some favorite pillows:

Subtle Window Seat

Both this embroidered bolster (to the left) and dupioni silk lumbar pillow gain richness and interest from lavish banded trims. As you can see here, even just a yard of the right trim makes a huge impact.

Child’s Play

Daybed pillows

On this child’s daybed, pillows add whimsy. The fun fish print pillow shams echo all the colors of the bedding and bolsters. And a personal touch was added with a custom pillow embroidered with – “A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you’re fast asleep.” – to commemorate the family’s Disney Cruise vacations.

Mancave Mix

In this mancave, fussy details wouldn’t work – nor be welcomed. Here some masculine fabrics with handsome leather cording add a bit of color and warmth. (Pro Tip: Fabric pillows don’t remain upright on leather furniture – they slip. Adding a leather cord gives enough friction for the pillows to resist slippage.)

Family Room Fun

Bobble trim – in moderation – adds a bit of lighthearted fun to these family room lumbar pillows. The colors of the banding and bobbles coordinate neatly with the chair’s patterned upholstery fabric.
